Don Rafael is a natural-born Marakame (medicine man) of the Wixárika Nation in Jalisco Mexico. He is one of the few remaining Marakame alive that have walked their ancient pilgrimage routes to sacred sites by foot. Don Rafa is currently part of the elder’s council and has held the responsibility of Jicarero for more than 50 years throughout different ceremonial centers. It’s a true honor to hear his words, songs, and teachings as he has been chosen to walk with multiple ceremonial centers within his tribe. He has also been governor of his village and now is assigned by his tribe to represent the Wirikuta Preservation Project to preserve the medicine and the sacred site of Wirikuta.
